Public input needed to stop utility rate increases and attack on rooftop solar

Kentuckians are pushing back hard against proposals from monopoly utilities trying to raise rates during the pandemic and rig the rules to harm the future of rooftop solar in Kentucky.

This month is a critical time to make your voice heard. The Kentucky Public Service Commission just announced a series of public hearings in April. These will be held online due to the pandemic. You can expect 3-5 minutes to speak, depending on how many other people sign up.

Here’s how to reserve your time to speak against these proposals:

  1. Choose the date(s) / time(s) from the list below.
  2. Email the Kentucky Public Service Commission (psc.meeting@ky.gov) to request to speak on the date(s) that works best for you. Include your name, address, phone and email.
  3. Fill out this quick form to let KFTC know you’ve signed up to speak.
  4. Prepare your comments by reviewing:

Here’s the list of upcoming public hearings before the Kentucky Public Service Commission:

Kentucky Power (case # 2020-00174)

  • Tuesday, April 6 at 9 a.m. ET: The PSC will accept public comments at the beginning of a three-day formal hearing on Kentucky Power’s proposal to slash the net metering credit new solar customers will receive for energy their systems provide to the grid.

Louisville Gas & Electric (case # 2020-00350) & Kentucky Utilities (case # 2020-00349)

  • Wednesday, April 14, 1 p.m. ET
  • Thursday, April 15,  5 p.m. ET
  • Tuesday, April 20, 5 p.m. ET

This rate case includes both a rate increase and a different yet also terrible proposal for slashing the net metering credit new solar customers will receive.

Again, anyone wishing to speak should email psc.meeting@ky.gov to be placed on the list of speakers. Include your name, address, phone and email address. Additional details on how to attend by either viewing or speaking during the virtual public meeting will be posted on the PSC web site.
