My name is Carl Shoupe and I’m a third generation coal miner, born and raised in Harlan County in eastern Kentucky. I’m writing to ask you to do one simple thing today to help support the pensions and health care for coal miners: sign a short statement of support that I will share with Senator Mitch McConnell.

Call to stop bad mine safety laws

Last week the Kentucky Senate passed two bills that essentially would shut down the state’s inspections of coal mines by eliminating required inspections (Senate Bill 297) and reducing safety training for mine foremen (Senate Bill 224).

Justice for Gynnya!

Last month, a young girl named Gynnya McMillen died while in custody at Juvenile Detention Center in Elizabethtown. Gynnya’s life mattered.

Her death has drawn national attention. There were clear violations of the safety protocols: She wasn’t checked on according to protocol. Nobody tried immediately to resuscitate her when she was found. And the night before her death, she was placed in what’s been called an “Aikido restraint” for not removing her sweatshirt.
