  1. As a student leader, you are aware that there is an emphasis on diversity issues at UK. What are some issues related to diversity that you believe are apparent on campus, and what do you plan to do to create change?

  2. The issue of diversity on campus is one that has been targeted for a while. Diversity awareness is probably something we have focused on more than anything. Though it may seem obvious, everyone is different and thus diverse. When speaking on diversity many students believe we only are trying to raise awareness of something other than the American norm. Our main goal should be to create an environment where every student feels comfortable to express their own sect within diversity. This would begin with communication and educating all students of their ignorance. Diversity should not be a hindrance on equal opportunity.

  3. What are your plans to help create an end to sexual violence and promote safety on campus?

  4. Knowledge is power. Though we are making good strides so far, we need to continue to raise awareness of sexual violence on campus. The best way to prevent instances is to have individuals take responsibility to make sure wrongdoings don't occur. Educating women in how to avoid situations that may become dangerous should also be a priority.

  5. In light of the recent budget issues in state government, what action should Student Government take to help maintain affordable higher education?

  6. I believe this responsibility will fall mostly on the SG president. The president has a seat on the Board of Trustees and ultimately can work with those in authority to make affordable education a priority. Also, as we have seen this past year, student representatives have met with legislators in Frankfort about this issue. These trips will make a huge difference to influence where the budget goes.

  7. What action, if any, do you believe is appropriate for Student Government to take to increase voter education and participation both in on-campus elections, and general elections?

  8. I believe that online elections will increase voter turnout tremendously. With online elections, however, I believe that an information page on the candidates should be displayed before students have the chance to vote. Though it is ultimately each persons' right to vote, people should be aware that if they do not vote, they have no right to complain about the outcome. In the case of SG, if students do not like any of the candidates they also obtain the right to run themselves.

  9. What are your plans with working side by side with landlords and the Lexington Fayette Urban County Government on off campus student housing?

  10. This is an extremely important issue in my eyes, as housing is very difficult to arrange right now. We should work toward a more student friendly off-campus housing arrangement. This would include housing which is more affordable, closer to campus, and more available. Housing should be set aside for student living until a certain date in the year. At that point it could then be opened to the general public for sale.

  11. Leaders often face the struggle of understanding the people they represent. UK has a very diverse student body in terms or race, class, gender identity, culture, ethnicity, religion, nationality, sexual orientation, and ability status. What measures will you take to educate yourself on these issues? In what ways will you commit yourself to better understand and represent this diverse student body?

  12. In what ways will you commit yourself to better understand and represent this diverse student body? The most practical way to address this issue with the SG members is to require a mandatory attendance at a number of SG "diverse" events. It may also be good to have a different 5 to 10 minute presentation by a different sect of diversity at each senate meeting during member's privilege.

  13. What are your thoughts on improving sustainability on campus? Considering current green issues such as recycling, renewable energy, and biking. What plans do you have to make UK a more green-friendly university?

  14. This past year, I met with an engineering company that produces extremely large fans. The design has enabled the fan to use very little energy itself but can be used in large building to control temperature, mainly heating, better. Ideas such as this will enable us to use less electricity and ultimately help with this issue.

  15. What is your response to the recent research proposal to log sections of UK-owned Robinson Forest? Would you be willing to voice a student opinion different from your own to higher administrative positions at UK?

  16. I believe that whatever action is decided concerning the Robinson Forest should be taken delicately. If this action is taken, I believe it should be regulated highly and a reclamation plan should be given to the public. I have no problem voicing a student's opinion as long as it is rational and well thought out.

  17. Use this space to address any additional ideas, plans, concerns, or platform ideas you have.

  18. I have many high hopes for Student Government next year. With an open mind and hard work I believe that we can really represent the student body next year. I hope to increase visibility of the members to a point where students feel comfortable in approaching any members with their concerns or ideas. Student Government only exists to represent the student body and that's what we should strive for.
