As a student leader, you are aware that there is an emphasis on diversity issues at UK. What are some issues related to diversity that you believe are apparent on campus, and what do you plan to do to create change?
-
What are your plans to help create an end to sexual violence and promote safety on campus?
-
In light of the recent budget issues in state government, what action should Student Government take to help maintain affordable higher education?
-
What action, if any, do you believe is appropriate for Student Government to take to increase voter education and participation both in on-campus elections, and general elections?
-
What are your plans with working side by side with landlords and the Lexington Fayette Urban County Government on off campus student housing?
-
Leaders often face the struggle of understanding the people they represent. UK has a very diverse student body in terms or race, class, gender identity, culture, ethnicity, religion, nationality, sexual orientation, and ability status. What measures will you take to educate yourself on these issues? In what ways will you commit yourself to better understand and represent this diverse student body?
-
What are your thoughts on improving sustainability on campus? Considering current green issues such as recycling, renewable energy, and biking. What plans do you have to make UK a more green-friendly university?
-
What is your response to the recent research proposal to log sections of UK-owned Robinson Forest? Would you be willing to voice a student opinion different from your own to higher administrative positions at UK?
-
Use this space to address any additional ideas, plans, concerns, or platform ideas you have.
Diversity is an issue that has been at the forefront of student and media attention throughout my three years at UK. As Chairman of the Inter-Greek Programming Assembly, I have worked to unite the three governing Greek bodies of IFC, Panhellenic, and NPHC. Together, they represent both men and women and unite historically white and African American organizations. IGPA has succeeded in organizing events such as Greek Week and Greek Service Week that bring these diverse groups together for a common cause. As a Student Government Senator, I will continue to perpetuate diversity through the College of Arts and Sciences and the entire student body.
Campus safety and an end to sexual violence is one goal that the entire University can agree upon. As a Student Government Senator I would make sure that organizations like SEEDS and the VIP Center would receive adequate funding. I would also use my position to improve awareness of these wonderful programs to achieve increased participation from UK students and faculty.
Student Government should play the role of uniting students for a common cause. I think we all can agree that affordable tuition costs should be maintained for our state. However, without unification we are just a group of small voices. I believe it is the duty of Student Government to unite and amplify our voice to demand recognition of our points of view.
Student Government should work to educate voters on candidates and their viewpoints. I believe SGA has made great strides in this area during the current election cycle. Online voting will increase voter participation by making it easier than ever to cast votes. The online posting of platforms and the work of publications such as this will increase voter education and accountability for candidates.
As a member of Student Government, I will relay and amplify the voices of students to the LFUCG. I will discuss with the SGA Executive Board the concerns of A&S students to make sure their opinions are heard.
As a member of the College of Arts and Sciences, I feel like I have been blessed to have met fellow students from all walks of life. The diverse group of majors that are offered by A&S has led to an ever more diverse student body. While I feel like I am ready to take on this role, I will work tirelessly throughout the next year to better understand and represent my college.
As Chairman of the Inter-Greek Programming Assembly, we have declared this year’s Greek Service Week as “Greeks go Green.” This issue is something that we feel strongly about and look forward to leading the UK Greek Community in these efforts. As a Student Government Senator, I would continue these efforts to improve sustainability and make UK more green-friendly.
As student leader, I have learned that when representing a diverse group of students, opinions rarely agree. I have also learned that my job as a leader is not always to determine which opinion is right. As a Senator I will work to collect all opinions and voice those opinions to the best of my ability, even if they do not agree with my own.
I can and will be the change that makes a difference for you and our University. I will seek the voices of students and amplify our collective ideas to achieve real progress for the College of Arts and Sciences. If given the opportunity, I will take the office of Senator with pride and a full-fledged obligation to serve you, our student body.
