Personal Statement

In running for Senator at Large my hope is to unite the students at the University of Kentucky. I want to use the power of Student Government to give the students of this university a voice and to allow them to make a difference. I want to make changes that directly affect the students and produce changes that they can see as well as experience. I also would like Student Government to be involved with as many different student organizations as possible, not only financially but on a hands-on basis. I hope to bring our diverse student body together for the greater good of the campus community.

  1. As a student leader, you are aware that there is an emphasis on diversity issues at UK. What are some issues related to diversity that you believe are apparent on campus, and what do you plan to do to create change?

  2. As a student at the University of Kentucky, the lack of diversity is very apparent on our campus. We place little to no emphasis on culturally diverse programs and events, and have no incentives for attending or being involved with these diverse organizations. As a member of the student senate I would make it my goal to not only assist these diverse and influential organizations financially, but also have a hands-on relationship with them. I would like to advertise the importance of these programs and allow incentives for attending culturally diverse events for all students.

  3. What are your plans to help create an end to sexual violence and promote safety on campus?

  4. Sexual Violence is a very serious issue on campus. In light of recent events on the campuses of neighboring universities, the threat of potential sexual and physical violence is extremely high. I would love to expand the use of the “Cats Path” that was established last year. If this system is used correctly, it could be very effective in decreasing the amount of violent activities, especially at night. I also would like to give more aid to the organization VIP. This organization is relatively new, but has already proved to be a very powerful and affluent program with the prevention of physical and sexual abuse for both men and women.

  5. In light of the recent budget issues in state government, what action should Student Government take to help maintain affordable higher education?

  6. Student Governments main objective is to be the voice of the student body. Budget and finance issues will affect all students now, and in the future. With this in mind the most important thing that Student Government can do is to maintain solid communication with the students, and the state and local governments. This will ensure that all students’ opinions and concerns are adequately expressed.

  7. What action, if any, do you believe is appropriate for Student Government to take to increase voter education and participation both in on-campus elections, and general elections?

  8. At this point Student Government needs to raise awareness about how much influence we can have for the Student Body. Student Government has the potential to be a huge organization with the power to obtain small and large goals for the university. I think that online voting is a step in the right direction, as far as increasing the number of students who vote in elections. I think having more voting poles and frequent online reminders about election time and dates could also lead to the substantial growth in the number of student voters. I think this will be the most effective thing that the candidates and current student government leaders can do to raise awareness.

  9. What are your plans with working side by side with landlords and the Lexington Fayette Urban County Government on off campus student housing?

  10. I think the prices of student housing off-campus have become astronomical. With the current economic trend, the prices of housing and utilities have risen. The local landlords are very competitive with pricing and will continue to be until students refuse to pay the high fees. Student Government has the ability to reach a broad and diverse audience of students. With this power there can be the opportunity for communication between students about pricing and favorable and unfavorable landlords.

  11. Leaders often face the struggle of understanding the people they represent. UK has a very diverse student body in terms or race, class, gender identity, culture, ethnicity, religion, nationality, sexual orientation, and ability status. What measures will you take to educate yourself on these issues? In what ways will you commit yourself to better understand and represent this diverse student body?

  12. As a student at the University of Kentucky we all have the opportunity to grow and learn from our peers. Although we have the opportunity, I do not feel that students take full advantage of prospect of learning from different cultures. Education in the classroom is obviously an important aspect of the college experience, but opening the eyes of students to different and unique cultures and ethnicities can be a powerful educational tool. As a member of Senate I would make it my goal to attend as many different culturally diverse events and functions as I possibly could. Having a personal experience with groups would enhance my understanding and appreciation of the importance of cultural diversity. Also, I would like to encourage as many students, faculty members, and community members to attend these events. The acceptance and understanding of diverse cultures in an important part of any life experience.

  13. What are your thoughts on improving sustainability on campus? Considering current green issues such as recycling, renewable energy, and biking. What plans do you have to make UK a more green-friendly university?

  14. Currently the trend of “going green” is becoming more and more prevalent in the United States. Young people have also become important figures and leaders in the movement. College students have the potential to make huge changes in the world in the years to come. Student Government has the power to help the university obtain its green-friendly goals. More recycling bins, increased space for bike storage, and increasing the knowledge of students about green issues are just some of the steps that Student Government can take to help the University of Kentucky become more eco-friendly.

  15. What is your response to the recent research proposal to log sections of UK-owned Robinson Forest? Would you be willing to voice a student opinion different from your own to higher administrative positions at UK?

  16. Robinson Forest has been an actively researched area of land for many years. The students at the University of Kentucky have been able to learn and conduct research in this forest region. For me, whatever is in the best interest of the environment and the actively participating student researchers is the best knowledge that we have of this issue. As a student leader I would be willing to voice the opinions of my fellow students concerning this issue, and give consideration to new ideas and solutions to this dispute. As a member of Student Government it is our job to be the voice of the students that may not have been heard otherwise. It is most important that we listen to the majority of students, rather than pursue our own opinions. We have to strive for the well being of the Campus, community, and the individuals who are involved. We must make sure that we give everyone at the University of Kentucky a voice in the issues that are relevant to them.

  17. Use this space to address any additional ideas, plans, concerns, or platform ideas you have.

  18. As a Senator at Large for the University of Kentucky I would make it my ultimate goal to ensure that every student has a voice in student affairs. I will strive for an increased emphasis on diversity, and encourage our student body to become more involved in the events of diverse organizations. I also want to encourage each student to become actively involved with their student government. We need to help individuals become aware of the potential influence that Student Government can have on our campus. My hope is that each student will be influenced or effected by something that Student Government does, and that they have a better understanding of how the organization operates and can create positive change.
