October 2009: How are Stimulus Dollars Being Spent in Kentucky?
On October 10th, recipients that were awarded contracts directly from the federal government through the 2009 federal stimulus package - the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act - reported on use of funds received through September. (The information below does NOT reflect use of money directly awarded to the state of Kentucky - that information will be released in November 2009).
In Kentucky, of $223 million awarded, $22.8 million was received and has been used to create 887 jobs throughout the state.
Most of these jobs were establishing through contracts awarded to the U.S. Army (244 jobs) and the Department of Defense (275 jobs). More jobs were created in Kentucky through stimulus contracts than in Ohio, Indiana and West Virginia.
Regionally speaking, there were expected clusters of contracts given to the urban areas of Lexington, Louisville and Frankfort.
Western Kentucky received the largest chunk of contract dollars in the state. A Department of Energy contract for $78 million was awarded for remediation services at the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant. 125 of the state’s total created jobs were created through this contract in Paducah.
More than $2.5 million was awarded throughout Eastern Kentucky, primarily through engineering contracts with two businesses – H.A. Spaulding, Inc. of Hazard and URS Group, Inc. of Maryland. These two businesses received nearly $1.3 million of the region’s money.
There are additional reporting deadlines for agencies and governments receiving grants and loans from the stimulus in the next few months. Check future issues of Balancing the Scales, KFTC’s stimulus web pages, www.kftc.org/stimulus2009, or www.recovery.gov, for more information.
