I work hard, but with wages this low I’m really struggling. I try to give my daughter everything she needs, and by the time I’ve made sure that’s she’s healthy and has what she needs for school, there’s nothing left.

I am a 27-year-old single mother of a wonderful 5-year-old son. As we all know, young children need a mother’s love, nurturing, understanding and undivided attention to mold them into upstanding and stable adults. It breaks my heart to say that I could not provide this for my child. Not because I did not want to work, but because I came home from work too tired to.

I grew up in a very poor family. My parents and my five siblings squeezed into a singlewide trailer, doing the best we could to get by. When I was very young, I realized how economic policies affected my everyday life. I decided then to devote my life to becoming a voice for the low-income community. In 2000, I received a Pell Grant to attend Western Kentucky University, and I plan on becoming an advocate for the low-income community after my husband graduates from seminary.
