Over the last four years, KFTC has experienced explosive growth, tripled grassroots fundraising and expanded campaigns around tax and economic justice, mountaintop removal and the restoration of voting rights for former felons. This growth has expanded our reach to people in every part of the state and across the country. A donation to KFTC is an investment in a grassroots organization that believes in the power of people, working together, to challenge injustices, right wrongs, and improve the quality of life for all Kentuckians.
A pledger (or sustaining member) is a donor that invests in the work of KFTC all year long. Instead of a one-time donation, this donor commits to give a contribution each month, 3 months, 6 months or yearly. These contributions can be automatically taken out of your account and can be set up with a voided check or a credit card. Since the Fall of last year we have seen a steady increase in people who are setting up pledges. Billy Ray lives in Glasgow Kentucky said his reasons for setting up a pledge were two-fold, “cash flow and the desire to sustain the mission over the long term.” For most, the pledge option gives members an opportunity to make a larger gift than what they would normally afford to give at one time. A regular donation throughout the year helps to expand our work all year, whether it is February and we're sending members to lobby in Frankfort or it is October and we are educating voters and turning them out to the polls.

What made you decide to pledge?
I support KFTC, but cannot always do that with time. With most organizations, any cessation in donations on my part comes from it falling off my radar; an address change may help to propel that, but a busy schedule is the major culprit. Making a recurring pledge helps to avoid that.
Did someone ask you? Did you just go online and set it up yourself?
I had been meaning to, but when a KFTC staff member (Tim Buckingham) called and suggested it as opposed to a standard donation, I went online and completed the form.
Why did you decide to pledge and not give a one-time donation?
Much of it is psychological; 1) I think that anyone is more apt to spend a few dollars more a month on something than to shell out a lot in one sitting, 2) If it is spread out over a longer period, and if it is withdrawn from your account and therefore represents what money you have to start the month out with, the decision becomes more fully integrated into your lifestyle, budget and your priorities, 3) When you have to withdraw a large sum of money at once from your account, it is simply more difficult to justify in your budget.
Would you recommend pledging to someone else?
Absolutely; I bet a lot of people that fall of the donation cycle don't necessarily make the decision to and it saves the labor on your part to re-recruit them. You do great work and especially if I can't give time, I still feel like I can contribute.
You've financially supported KFTC for a long time (each month since March of 2007), what do you like about the organization?
I must say that the piece I pay most attention to and find particularly imperative is mountaintop removal; though I think that your voter empowerment work and economic justice work are also of fundamental importance. However, I would say that in general, your method of work may be of most significance, because it underlies everything…granting a voice to the people you represent. It is evident in the way you construct your website and manage your actions; I think you emphasize the grassroots aspect very well.
