Rowan 2"I am happy to be a part of the Rowan County Chapter because its members are committed to the ideals of social and environmental justice. The Chapter doesn't just talk about positive change; it takes action on a local level to make that change in the community."

 -Amanda Moore, Rowan Chapter Member

The Rowan County Chapter of Kentuckians For The Commonwealth hold the distinction of being the only chapter that does not receive the full-time support of a KFTC organizer. They are also currently the only chapter not located in either the eastern Kentucky coalfields or one of the major urban areas of Kentucky.

The Rowan County Chapter has won KFTC’s chapter fundraising award for the last two years. This award goes to the KFTC chapter that raises the most grassroots money through local events and activities. This achievement has been in a large part thanks to the efforts of the Rowan County Fundraising Coordinator, Erica Schuler along with the support of many other chapter members and leaders.

The other Rowan Chapter officers are:

  •   Sue Tallichet, Rowan County Steering Committee Representative
  •   Liz Frazier, Rowan County Steering Committee Alternate
  •   Shanna Brooks, Rowan County Membership Coordinator
  •   Liz Frazier, Rowan County Publicity Coordinator

Chapter officers are elected every year at the August Chapter Meeting.

Local Issues

“When [the coal fired power plant] is bad, it dumps noxious black smoke onto the predominantly low-income housing that is down-wind of the smoke stack. This is a very old power plant and it needs to be updated. I’d like to see the University reduce the pollution from their power plant as much as possible and encourage them to become a greener citizen.”
-Erik Lewis, Rowan County Steering Committee Representative

Local issues the Rowan County Chapter has focused on:

  • Suspending the unnecessary 3rd Rowan interchange, 645 corridor Highway project. This project would have carved a large chunk out of the Daniel Boone National Forest as well as impairing some pristine streams.
  • The Chapter continues to challenge the location of the proposed Rowan/Cranston transmission line.
  • The Chapter is also continuing to challenge the US Forest Service's poorly conceived Ice Storm Recovery Project.
  • Recently the Rowan County Chapter voted to contest the local emissions from the Morehead State University coal fired power plant.
  • Local development and land use issues specifically surrounding the newly proposed Super Wal-Mart. For example the current plan will create traffic problems and flooding problems    because of excessive water run-off.
