2006 Annual Awards

At each annual membership meeting, KFTC recognizes the remarkable work and commitment to KFTC and social justice shown by some outstanding individuals. Here are this year’s award winners.


The Evelyn Williams Award  

Named for Evelyn Williams, a Knott County member who fought all her life against racism and for the rights of women and the poor. Evelyn's perseverance paid off in many victories, including helping win rights for landowners against oil and gas drillers.

Presented to the members who have persevered against great obstacles and over time to win an important victory.

The Alice O. Martin Award

Named for Alice O. Martin, a Floyd County member who preferred a behind-the scenes role but was an almost daily volunteer in the Prestonsburg KFTC office during the 1988 broad form deed campaign and at other times.

Presented to the person who has worked behind the scenes and has provided dedicated and outstanding volunteer service to help make KFTC stronger.

The Joe Begley & Everett Akers Award  

Named for Joe Begley of Letcher County and Everett Akers of Floyd County, leaders in the
fight against strip mining and the broad form deed.


Presented to the KFTC member who is jailed, loses a job, or faces some other major adversity because of their work for social justice.

The Daniel Thompson Bridge Builder Award

Named for Greenup County member Daniel Thompson, who worked within KFTC, his union and his community to overcome divisions and discrimination based on race, religion, income, sexual orientation and other barriers.

Presented to the member who diligently and faithfully worked to bring together diverse groups of people within KFTC.

The Sister Marie Gangwish Award

Named for Sister Marie Gangwish, a steadfast supporter of KFTC, including her creative and determined grassroots fundraising. She was not afraid to ask — and few could turn her down.

Presented to the member who has worked steadily and creatively to raise the grassroots funds that support KFTC’s success.

The Joyce Wise Award

Named for Joyce Wise, a Rowan County leader who believed strongly in justice for all people and would do all she could on the personal, organizational and social levels to assist others.

Presented to the person who has overcome personal adversity in order to commit their life to helping others.

Presented to the KFTC member who has committed his or her life in the service of
others by working for social justice.

The Gladys Maynard Start of Something Big Award

Named for Gladys Maynard, KFTC's first chairperson and a leader in bringing about much-needed social and political change in Martin County and Kentucky.

Presented to the member(s) whose vision and action led to the creation of a movement that has had a significant impact for social justice.

KFTC also recognized several Special Friends.  These awards went to: Barry and Edie Bingham, Rep. Jim Wayne, Rep. Kathy Stein, Sen. Ernesto Scorsone, Rep. Don Pasley, Rep. Rick Nelson and the Mountain Association for Community Economic Development.
