Voter suppression laws on the rise

Efforts to suppress voter participation in this year's important national efforts are on the rise throughout the country, including in Florida where the U.S. Department of Justice has had to intervene. These efforts are directed largely at minorities. In 2011, at least 34 states introduced suppressive laws that would make it much more difficult for millions of eligible Americans to vote in this fall’s election, according to a study by the Brennan Center for Justice, a non-partisan public policy and law institute. Such laws passed in 14 states, and are pending in others.
