Wildcraft Weekend | Kentuckians For The Commonwealth

Wildcraft Weekend

Have you ever wondered the names of all those plants in the woods near your house? Do you know which plants are edible, which ones could be used for home remedies or which ones to stay away from? Whether you are a complete beginner or someone who is looking to share your knowledge of the woods with others and learn more, join us for Hindman Settlement School's Wildcraft Weekend. Under the guidance of local botanist, John Craft, participants will enjoy a weekend of finding and cataloging native edible and herbal plants. Wildcraft Weekend participants will also learn about:

  • History of herbal uses such as tinctures, mints and teas;
  • Native American influences in preservation of plants;
  • Edible plants, including those found in higher elevations;
  • Medicinal herbs;
  • How to prepare oils, tinctures and salves; and
  • How to identify and gather greens.

Instructor John Craft is a native of Letcher County, Kentucky and currently makes his home in Leslie County. John grew up learning about plants under the guidance of his grandmother, "Mommy Hall," of Millstone, Kentucky. He has since spent a lifetime studying native plants and herbs.

Workshop Fee: $135 (Includes tuition, materials and meals for all three days.) The Settlement School invites local residents to join the hike and lunch on Saturday.
