Shelby County KFTC and NAACP Soul Food Dinner | Kentuckians For The Commonwealth

Shelby County KFTC and NAACP Soul Food Dinner

Shelby County NAACP Soul Food Dinner cosponsored by the Shelby County KFTC Chapter:  Join us on Friday, February 27th from 6:30 to 8:30 at the Stratton Community Center.  We will enjoy a delicious dinner of home-cooked soul food while also hearing from guest speaker Diane Perrin Coon. Ms. Coon will give a talk titled, "Slavery, Anti-Slavery and the Underground Railroad in Shelby County." Admission is $10 and benefits the NAACP.

About the talk:  Before the Civil War, Shelby County had 43% of its population enslaved. In spite of widespread enslavement, a small but energized number of local people opposed Slavery; and for a short period one of only two abolition newspapers in the country was published in Shelbyville. The county also hosted a relatively organized UGRR route that operated from Shelby County to the Ohio River crossing at Clifty Falls, just west of Madison, Indiana. These issues will be described and open for questions and discussion.
