Rally for Voting Rights | Kentuckians For The Commonwealth

Rally for Voting Rights

KFTC members and allies will gather in the Capitol rotunda to speak out for the voting rights of people with felonies in their past.  Most of the speakers will be people currently denied their rights – some of the 312,000 Kentuckians who can't vote because of Kentucky’s extreme felony disenfranchisement law.

There's a governor's race this year, so we'll put pressure on candidates to support voting rights, encouraging them to commit to use their power, if elected, to issue pardons or streamline the process by which someone can request their right to vote – a process Governor Bevin has made even harder since taking office.

Schedule:

Pre-rally: People with felonies in their past will gather inside the front door of the capitol (700 Capital Ave. in Frankfort) starting at noon for rotating video interviews, or inside the rotunda starting at 1 p.m.

Rally: From 2-3 p.m. we'll have a rally in the Capitol rotunda with singing and stories from people who are being denied their right to vote. We'll deliver our messages to Governor Bevin, calling on him to use his power as governor to reinstate the streamlined process for rights restoration that he overturned after he took office.

After: There will be an optional debrief meeting in the capitol annex in room 169 at 3:30 p.m. As you go there through the underground tunnel connecting the two buildings, take some time to look at the ACLU display along the hallway focused on Kentucky's history of lynching. We've fought for the right to vote in a lot of ways over the years and it brings home the gravity of the issue.

What to bring:

- A photo ID to get through capitol security

- (optional) a pen to hand off to Governor Bevin's office in case he needs one to sign an executive order to restore voting rights

- Yourself!
