The movement to end mountaintop removal is large and each of us has a place in it. Some of us risk arrest, others share knowledge with children and church groups, still others attend rallies, write letters, make phone calls and more. It takes all of these pieces to make our movement whole. All of us are responsible for helping to save our land and protect our communities.

Please join us on Tuesday, February 14th for I Love Mountains day to continue calling for an end to mountaintop removal and asking our leaders to share a vision for the solutions that Kentucky so desperately needs. Help us call on Governor Beshear, our state legislative leaders, and even our leaders in Washington D.C. to serve the public interest by ending mountaintop removal and looking towards a clean energy future that provide good, safe jobs and health communities.

Opportunity for youth!

KFTC youth are going to spend the morning of I Love Mountains Day trying to have lobby meetings with top state lawmakers. Would you like to be part of this youth-led lobby team or do you know a young person within the ages of 5 and 25 who would be?

What it involves: Each youth would be responsible for attending a planning meeting over the phone (conference call) with other KFTC youth leaders and then meeting in the Capitol the morning of I Love Mountains Day at 9:30 a.m. to begin our round of lobbying meetings.

How to get involved: If this sounds like you, please call or email KFTC staff person Carissa Lenfert at 859-893-1147 or carissa@kftc.org to sign up. Youth interested must sign-up by January 31st.

Spread the word: Also, please pass this announcement along to anyone you may know who would be a great addition to the youth team!

What to bring!

Bring Pinwheels!

Pinwheel

For this year’s march, we will be delivering small pinwheels to Governor Beshear and our legislators. We hope to have 1,200 pinwheels at the march – with each pinwheel representing 50 people living with cancer caused by strip mining in their community (Source: Journal of Community Health, July 2011). Each pinwheel will also represent the hope that wind turbines and other clean energy solutions mean for our future. If possible, please bring a pinwheel for each person attending the march and rally. If 1,200 people each bring 1 pinwheel, we will have enough pinwheels to represent the 60,000 people living with cancer. You can find simple instructions on how to make a pinwheel online.

Also bring:

  • A photo ID (it’s required to enter the Capitol or Annex buildings if you are over 18).

  • Warm clothes, including gloves, hats, and warm socks.

  • Something to eat and drink (please eat lunch before the march begins. There is a cafeteria in the Capitol Annex building basement).

  • A banner or sign (bring signs that celebrate your church, school or organization or proclaim a good message.)

Help us send a united, powerful and constructive message and tone

  • We’ll have many signs for participants to carry. You are also welcome to create your own.

  • Be respectful to all people (including legislators, receptionists, and security officers).

  • Be sure to pick up any trash you see left along the way.

  • Thanks for helping us make this day a celebration of all that we love and want to protect about our land, water, and communities.
