Appalachia Rising is a mass mobilization in Washington, DC, September 25-27, 2010, calling for an end to the devastating practice of mountaintop removal mining. Mountaintop removal has already destroyed over 500 of the world's oldest mountains and more than 2,000 miles of streams, and has contaminated our nation's waters. Together, we will bring Appalachia's cry to our nation's capital: We must end mountaintop removal and transform the economies of Appalachia away from destructive mining practices and toward clean-energy jobs and a sustainable and healthy future.
Join KFTC and Appalachia Rising for a mass mobilization in Washington, DC in late September as we call for the abolition of mountaintop removal and strip mining and a renewed vision for Appalachia.
Appalachia Rising declares that we are not a national sacrifice zone. We will not stand idly by as we see our past and future blasted to rubble, our communities and mountains eliminated, and our neighbors poisoned as coal executives and their shareholders grow rich. Appalachians are not, and never will be, collateral damage. We are proud of our coal mining heritage, hard-working neighbors, and Appalachian past, present and future!
Appalachia is endowed with abundant resources too long plundered by outside interests. We call for the abolition of surface mining, a just transition for coalfield communities, and renewed investment in a prosperous and just economy in Appalachia."
Appalachia Rising will consist of two events. First, a weekend conference, September 25-26 — an opportunity to build or join the movement for justice in Appalachia through strategy discussions and sharing knowledge across regional and generational lines. The second event on Monday, September 27, is the Appalachia Rising Day of Action which will unify thousands in calling for an end to mountaintop removal and all forms of steep slope surface mining though a vibrant march and rally. An act of dignified nonviolent civil disobedience may be possible for those who wish to express themselves by risking arrest.
KFTC encourages participation in the training and in the march as part of a KFTC delegation. We leave it up to participants' own discretion as to whether or not to participate in the act of civil disobedience.
We will be sending groups for the Day of Action as well as the entire weekend. Our delegation will be leaving on the 24th and likely returning on the 28th. Limited financial assistance available, meaning we may be able to cover the expenses for many who are part of our delegation.
