KFTC thanks Gov. Beshear, mayors for their bold action on House Bill 279

KFTC has sent a letter to Gov. Steve Beshear thanking him for his "wise decision" to veto House Bill 279.

Beshear vetoed the controversial bill on Friday, citing its potential to weaken local civil rights laws, negatively impact economic development efforts and disrupt enforcement of drug laws, among other threats.

"Our state government has an important role to play in ensuring that Kentuckians have the freedom to worship and follow their own personal religious faith and traditions, while also ensuring that individuals’ civil liberties and civil rights are upheld," stated the letter from KFTC Chairperson Suzanne Tallichet. "We therefore applaud your recent action regarding HB 279 and encourage you to continue working to promote a vision for a diverse and inclusive Kentucky."

Similar letters were sent to Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer and Covington Mayor Sherry Curran. Each had publicly encouraged the governor to veto the bill, as had many other community and faith leaders and organizations.

KFTC’s issue platform, adopted annually by our membership, states the following: “We will work to create a fair and just society that respects human and civil rights, uplifts all people to their potential, and values the participation of everyone.”

Our platform goes on to specify that KFTC "opposes oppression and harassment of people based on ability, age, gender, national origin, citizenship, race, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, or immigration status. We believe that all Kentuckians have the right to live their lives fully and well without fearing that their job, housing, or personal safety is at risk because of who they are. Furthermore, we hold that all Kentuckians benefit when our communities are welcoming and safe places for people from diverse backgrounds."
