Dream 9 Immigration Rights Action

KFTC members and friends have been following the "Dream 9" immigration rights dirction action that started in late July in Arizona.  The "Deam 9" is the name given to nine undocumented young people who crossed the border from Mexico into the U.S. to voluntarily turn themselves into the U.S.  This act of civil disobedience has been called one of the most important, and riskiest, direct actions in the movements history.  The Dream 9 action is to protest the high rate of deportation that has been happening under the Obama Administration and higlight the need for reform.  There is a good, long article about the action in today's L.A. Times and you can read here.

One of the Dream 9, Marco Saavedra, is scheduled to speak at KFTC's annual meeting in two weeks, if he is released in time and granted asylum in the U.S.  Marco hopes to be able to tell the story of the Dream 9 and the work that he and other activists are doing to pass a Dream Act and comprehensive immigration reform.  Another one of the Dream 9, Ceferino Martinez, grew up and graduated from highschool in Lexington, KY.  His brother, Pedro, will also be joining KFTC at our annual meeting.    Please consider joining us at KFTC's annual meeting on August 16th to the 18th to learn more about the Dream 9, the immigration rights movement, and what you can do to get involved.  You can also follow the Dream 9 action through the National Immigrant Youth Alliance's facebook page here.  There you can learn about the action steps they are asking individuals to take to help the Dream 9, including making phone calls to Congress, sending encouraging notes to the Dream 9, and more!
