The Associated Press has developed an interactive map showing the generation and disposal of toxic coal ash around the country.  Kentucky has the third highest (after Ohio and Indiana) amount of coal waste, generating more than 4 million tons of ash per year, with 45 percent of this going into ponds (2005 data).
