Beshear and Tayna Fogle in Northern Kentucky

On Governor Beshear's continuing tour of Town Hall meetings across the state, he's encountered KFTC members at every turn.  Last night's Town Hall meeting in Northern Kentucky was no different.

KFTC member and former felon spokesperson Tayna Fogle came out to the meeting and had a lot of time to talk about Restoration of Voting Rights for Former Felons and to address the Governor (and other politicians in the room) in front of the audience.  She thanked Beshear for the changes he'd already made and pushed he and others to continue to improve the process, enfranchising more voters and including them in our democracy.

I know you've taken some hard knocks from a few people for changing the process to restore voting rights to more former felons, but thank you for having the courage to do what you've done - and I hope you can help us do more!

                                                                             - Tayna Fogle

Tayna talked about her experience in the Primary Election in which KFTC brought together former felons to be a part of the election by calling people to remind them to vote and by giving rides to polls.    She got several rounds of applause  and lots of encouragement from the crowd.

Senator Jack Westwood was also present, who Tayna publicly thanked for listening to her about restoration over the past year and chided him for at first opposing a constitutional amendment to restore voting rights, then later strongly supporting it.

Governor Beshear has three more Town Hall meetings scheduled - in Western Kentucky.  If you're in the area, come out and talk to him about issues that matter to you!

  • August 18 – Henderson
  • August 19 – Murray
  • August 20 – Paducah

Oh, how I do love this woman. What a great leader!

I'm curious as to how Beshear reacted to what Tayna spoke on.

Beshear's Reaction

Beshear reacted really well. He also gave Tayna a big hug and complimented her a lot.

Now it remains to be seen whether or not that translates into a high level of support of our Restoration of Voting Rights Constitutional Amendment in the House next year.

He was certainly less supportive in their previous session than he needed to be and pushed House leadership to delay on Restoration to allow his gambling bill more time.

At any rate, this was a great interaction to have - Thanks Tayna!

Hopefully

Encounters like this will push Steve to support legislation that is more important than giving Keeneland some slot machines. Not that I care one way or the other about slot machines, we've just got more pressing matters right now.

(And, of course, Tayna is awesome)

great story!

What a great story! I bet Tayna brought the house down! Great work, and thank you for all you do, Tayna!

Expungement Bill

Is there any group in KY I can join to help this cause?

Troy,

This is an issue KFTC occasionally lends assistance to allies on, but we mostly focus on Restoration instead of expungement.

The group that comes to mind most when I think of expungement work is People Advocating Recovery
