House passes coal subsidies bill

by Erik Hungerbuhler last modified August-22-2007 11:39 AM

With a vote of 87-10 the Kentucky House of Representatives passed the unprecedentedly expensive coal-conversion subsidy bill.  Representatives Wayne and Riner attempted to amend the bill to require that the coal-conversion plants capture CO2 emissions and to lower the bar for companies applying for renewable energy incentives, but the amendments were not even considered.  The bill now moves to the Senate.  It will be heard tomorrow in the Senate A&R committee.

Here is a list of those who voted against the bill:

  • Rep. Higdon

  • Rep. Marzian

  • Rep. Meeks

  • Rep. Burch

  • Rep. Wayne

  • Rep. Floyd

  • Rep. Palumbo

  • Rep. Riner

  • Rep. Stein

  • Rep. Belcher

We are asking that our members and supporters call the Legislative Message Line 1-800-372-7181 to thank the Representatives who took a stand and voted against this bill.  Also, please leave a message for members of the Senate A&R committee urging them to oppose House Bill 1

True intentions

There were five floor amendments introduced. Two included language about "...their first priorities and principles of operation (to be) the health and welfare of their employees and the citizens of the Commonwealth and the protection of the environment, including Kentucky's land, air, and water.". The other amendments were attempts to make the renewable elements of the legislation realistic and practicle including a 25% rebate for homeowners to install solar water heaters. The House Leadership choose to ignore these amendments because the true intent was to provide subsidies for corporations like Peabody.

Thanks

Thanks for the updates!

Coal subsidy bill + DOI Regulations

Posted by Joe Bauman at August-23-2007 08:38 AM
Between the state legislature's support of new subsidies for the coal industry and the Deprtment of Interior's proposed regulations on mountaintop removal, the quality of life in Eastern Kentucky, which has never been high, will be even more degraded. What is left of a wonderful heritage of work ethic, music, story and faith will be further diminished for one more dollar for the coal industry.

House Bill 1: Focus on the Senate

Thanks so much for all your efforts to defeat House Bill 1! I did call the legislative hotline and left a message for members of the Senate Appropriations and Revenues committee to oppose House Bill 1. If each person calls the legislative hotline and leaves a message for members of the Senate Appropriations and Revenues committee to oppose House Bill 1 maybe this bill can be stopped! I hope each individual will call now. We have to live with our consciences if we don't at least try!
