State lawmakers have been in Boston this past week at a national legislative conference, but that hasn't stopped the closed-door negotiations between the two parties around subsidies for Peabody Energy.  Whether or not the special session to address this legislation will be called on Monday is still up in the air, however.

Republican Gov. Ernie Fletcher said lawmakers are getting "very close" to agreeing on energy legislation that would be the focus of a special legislative session expected to start Monday, but leading Democratic legislators sounded far more pessimistic.

House Majority Floor Leader Rocky Adkins, D-Sandy Hook, said today it will be “difficult” to reach compromise before Monday on a bill that would provide tax incentives for companies converting coal into synthetic fuels.

“I think it would be wise for the governor to give us a little more time,” Adkins said.

As it stands, anything is possible.  There may (or may not) be a meeting on Saturday morning to continue the negotiations on the bill, but regardless of the outcome of that meeting the Governor has the ultimate authority to call the session.

If the session is called for Monday, KFTC leaders have scheduled a lobby day in Frankfort to show citizen opposition to this issue.  We call for all concerned citizens to come to Frankfort to confront their legislators and express their outrage at this issue.  Check back on our website this weekend for confirmation on this event.
